Brief descriptions and reviews of new files added to the system during
November, 1986:
[12-04-86]
REVW1186.ARC 60693 12-05-86 Bulletin 1's New File Comments Nov '86
Reviews of files added to the system in November (actually, through
12/4/86) have been collected in this archive and will be deleted from this
bulletin.
BORINT.ARC 3072 12-04-86 Fix Borland INT bugs v1.1 8/22/86
The problem is that the gurus at Borland often break all the rules to get
their programs to work. If you're having problems with SuperKey, Turbo
Lightning or others on a compatible or under DOS 2.1, this program may
help. U/L by Jim Weddle.
TF-BOOK.ARC 42985 12-04-86 Print out phone book from TELEFIND.ARC file
Program to take an ASCII file from the TF program and print a nice readable
phone directory suitable for use in a small loose-leaf notebook. Also can
be used to print Rolodex cards. The TF program is NOT included. If you
don't already have this nice program, download TELEFIND.ARC. U/L by
Kenneth Marks.
CRITMSC.ARC 5120 12-04-86 Critical error handler(int 24H) for MSC K.W.
Two functions that implement a simple critical error handler for Microsoft
C. If a critical error occurs, the default DOS handler is called, which
will display the 'ABORT, RETRY, IGNORE' message and wait for a key to be
struck. If retry or ignore are selected, then DOS does whatever it is it
supposed to do in that situation. If, however, the user selects abort,
then control is returned to your program at the point where the call to
setup_crit was made. Written and U/L by Kent Williams.
[12-03-86]
IBMAUX34.ARC 7168 12-03-86 Remote console capabilities for COM 1-4
Adds support for COM ports 3 and 4 to the already existing programs that
supported the "normal" DOS COM ports. Echos remote activity to the local
screen -- that is, this is sort of an enhanced CTTY command. No source.
U/L by Don Udel.
ROS34MS.ARC 122880 12-03-86 ROS 3.4 BBS port to DOS/TP source
TP source for a good BBS system that has been ported to DOS. You also need
the Borland Database Toolbox. U/L by Tadas Osmolskis.

utils instead. Source code not included. U/L by John Stanton.
[12-02-86]
TEXTCHEK.ARC 43008 12-02-86 WS util checks unpaired chars, space errors
Catches the following 2 common errors in a WS file: (1) Makes sure that
characters that should occur in pairs, like certain control characters,
quotes, parentheses, and brackets, actually do. (2) Flags incorrect use of
spaces in text, such as extra spaces between words and inconsistent numbers
of spaces between sentences. U/L by Arnie Kuzmack.
[12-01-86]
PCEDITOR.ARC 24576 12-01-86 PC Editor -- easy to use editor for PC
Another better than Edlin (but what isn't?) full-screen editor for the PC,
but no competition for Qedit or Edwin except that it's much smaller and
perhaps easier to use. A few unique features in this one that may
make it worth a look. U/L by Loren Olson.
CONV120.ARC 8192 12-01-86 Converts various graphics file formats
Converts various graphics file formats to others. Separate programs for
each format supported. U/L by Jay Guitan.
BASDLX.ARC 16000 12-01-86 Deluxe library of Func. for Compiled BASIC
A nice set of functions, in CALLable LIB form, for QB 2.0 or the similar,
but overpriced, IBM version (ahem). v.1.1. U/L and written by Gustavo
Verdun.

Brief descriptions and reviews of new files added to the system during
November, 1986:
ZANSI.ARC 31744 11-30-86 Fast ANSI device driver/Hanlin's mods to NANSI
Tom Hanlin has taken the code from NANSI and made it more compact in terms
of memory usage and even faster. Tom claims about a 6% speed improvement
over NANSI and, at least on an XT machine I've done a little testing on,
that seems just about right. ASM source is included. U/L and written by
Tom Hanlin.
LW86.ARC 21504 11-30-86 Nifty popup assembler programming help v1.1
"Language Window is a pop-up quick reference guide for computer programming
languages. This edition of Language Window is for the Intel 8086/88,
80186/188 instruction sets. Because Language Window is memory resident,
language reference information such as coding syntax and execution speed is
available instantly from within any application." Very professionally done
and well-documented. U/L by Jerry Shifrin.
ROFF4.ARC 111616 11-30-86 ROFF4 v1.61 - powerful text formatter/MS-C
ROFF4 is an expanded version of ROFF, based on the formatter in Kernighan
and Plauger's book SOFTWARE TOOLS. C source included. U/L by Ed Hopper.
QBX205.ARC 52224 11-30-86 QuickBASIC cross-ref. util. v2.05, V. Buerg
11/28/86 version of Vern Buerg's excellent Quick Basic xref utility with
quite a few corrections and improvements. An indispensable tool if you do
any kind of serious programming with QB. U/L by Jack Kilday.

Brief descriptions and reviews of new files added to the system during
November, 1986:
EZFRMD11.ARC 174080 11-30-86 Working demo of EZ-Forms 1.1/Forms Generator
A somewhat crippled version of a very good forms generation package with
sample forms. There's no list of the features that have been omitted from
the non-registered version. The major one I bumped into was that you can
only install it for a generic printer, rather than taking advantage of
special capabilities of specific printers that are supported. Still, even
crippled, it's a useful package. Changes for this version:
- This is a complete rewrite of EZ-Forms with many new features.
See the on-line manual and context sensitive help (F1) for
complete details of the new features.
- Form compression is here at last -- forms occupy only 1/3 of
the disk space they used to need. Great space saver!
- Forms can now be up to 126 lines x 255 columns (6X larger than rev C).
- Additional character graphics symbols added (block shade characters).
- Lotus style menus with additional description on second line.
- Bold (double strike) and underline can now be used in forms.
- Auto date and auto time insertion into forms (like auto numbering).
- AltP patch mode and AltG full screen draw mode have been added to
make it easier to create and modify forms.
- Forms can now be selected from the directory by using a color bar.
U/L by Hewie Poplock.

PCWEMACS.ARC 1024 11-29-86 Emacs key definitions for PCWrite (updated)
U/L by Jack Velte.
EVALUATE.ARC 6144 11-29-86 Evaluate and parse TPascal expressions
Takes a legal arithmetic expression in the form of a string and evaluates
it. It also displays the "expression tree" generated, and converts the
expression to RPN notation. U/L by Craig Hulvey.
SETENV.ARC 16384 11-29-86 Set environ within TPascal using INT $2E
A demo program of how to stuff a string in the environment from within a TP
program. U/L by Craig Hulvey.

PSF.ARC 10240 11-28-86 Print Screen to File, *beta* v0.01, 11/27/86
And another one in this category. My current favorite of this group
happens to be TDSNAP because it is easy to use and can be uninstalled from
memory. U/L by Bob Weinstein.
CVTFON14.ARC 44032 11-28-86 Convert modem DIRs v1.4, 11/27/86, S. Linhart
Justin Boyan's comm program has been added to the list of supported comm

No doc -- it's all in the on-line help. U/L by Tim Conner.
MV2.ARC 2048 11-28-86 Another move file utility/not across devices
Handles renaming (moving) subdirs particularly well, but is otherwise not
as powerful as others, particularly as it cannot move across devices
(actually, copy and erase). U/L by Ami Dworkin.
DIR-LS.ARC 12288 11-28-86 Unix-like Dir Listing for DOS/C src/K.Williams
A mod to Kent William's LS (dir) program for DOS to make the code less
compiler dependent. U/L by Ami Dworkin.
FCON200C.ARC 45056 11-28-86 Fansi-Console 2.00C DEV & HST 11/26/86
Sigh -- another revision. U/L by Craig Smith.
FASTCHK.ARC 13440 11-28-86 Gives CHKDSK info but F-A-S-T/No doc
Actually, this gives more info than CHKDSK does, such as the current dir,
path, and more, plus all the usual info CHKDSK provides. A handy little
program. No doc file. U/L by Pete Olympia.

CSTRINGS.ARC 14883 11-27-86 Search file for text strings/DLC 2.12 source
Yet another string search/matcher but DLC 2.12 source makes it particularly
attractive. U/L by John Limpert.
DSZ.ARC 32633 11-27-86 DOS Zmodem module/runs from other comm prgs
Interesting. Perhaps in recognition of the fact that not everyone was
going to put up with the idiosyncracies of Pro-YAM or ZCOMM to use
Forsberg's new ZMODEM program, here's a stand-alone Zmodem module that can
be executed from within other comm programs (typically using shell
features). It seems to work fine, BUT is doing something odd about
restoring the status of the comm port on exit -- with PibTerm, Qmodem, and
Telix, I found I often could no longer communicate with the remote system
after using this module unless I exited the comm program -- leaving DTR
high so as not to disconnect -- and then loading it again. U/L by John
Limpert.
RZSZ1ET2.SHQ 65536 11-27-86 11/15/86 shell archive/Forsberg's Unix rz/sz
Speaking of Zmodem, here's yet another update to Forsberg's rz and sz
programs for Unix. As usual, no indication as to what he has changed. U/L
by John Limpert.
FSETRM11.ARC 69760 11-27-86 Full screen edit comm prgrm for mainfr access
FSETERM V1.1 is a full screen editing communication program for the IBM
PC/XT/AT and compatibles, written to have full screen editing capability
while using TSO on an IBM mainframe. U/L and written by Jerry Kwit.
VFAT.ARC 10240 11-27-86 Where on disk are files/Gives FAT info
This one badly needs a doc. It's a dir program that gives you a peek at
some of the FAT info, but without a doc it's not clear to me what all this
program can do and I'm not willing to muck with it. U/L by Mike
Rubenstein.
[11-26-86]
DISKMAP.ARC 17792 11-26-86 Directory tree with sub-dir sizes/COM only
No doc: Gives a list of all your subdirs with the number of bytes used by
the files in each. Nicely formatted. U/L by Bob Redick.
PSSST.ARC 71680 11-26-86 Suspense & phone-list mgr in dbii (by ang).
"pSSSt is a combination suspense, priority, and phone management program
designed to operate with dBase II under MS- DOS. It will run on any MS-DOS
computer without graphics, however, screen displays are enhanced if running
it on a Z-100 or Z-150 (or compatible)." Docs are in WS format. U/L by
Dennis Hugg.

BOOTDM.ARC 8192 11-25-86 Formatted display of boot record w/ASM
"The purpose of BootDump.com is to read the Boot record parameters from the
default drive (A-H) of any IBM or IBM compatible PC, XT, or AT running
under MS-DOS and display the parameters in human-readable format to the
console. (It is important to note that BootDump.com reads from the
absolute disk sector which contains the Boot record." U/L by Jack Kilday.
NYWORD21.ARC 157696 11-25-86 NYWord version 2.1 with spell check
NYWSPELL.ARC 66560 11-25-86 Spelling checker for nyword 2.1
NYWREMAP.ARC 34816 11-25-86 NYWord info and programs to remap keyboard
The major change in v2.1 of NYWord is the addition of a spell check
capability. This is really a very powerful WP package but it continues to
be marred by an awful distribution policy (no docs until you register except
for the somewhat useful help files) and a pretty fair number of significant
bugs that crop up after each release, indicating rather inadequate beta
testing (if any). I wish the author, Marc Adler, would get it all together
as the package shows a lot of promise --- someday, maybe. U/L by Nevin
Dubin.
QUBECALC.ARC 160768 11-25-86 3 dimensional spreadsheet/graphs/macros
QubeCalc is a true three dimensional spreadsheet (as opposed to a two
dimensional spreadsheet which lets you link cells of multiple spreadsheets
together). U/L by Loren Olson.

lightning fast. This version has reduced the assembly code by 60% without
sacrificing speed - only 759 bytes of compiled code for all eight
utilities. U/L by Craig Hulvey.
MACROS.ARC 7168 11-22-86 MASM IF/While Macros
Macro include file for use with MASM assembler. Allows you to use high
level constructs like IF, WHILE, ELSE, FOR in assembly language with no
sacrifice in speed or code size. Even make code more readable. Reasonably
commented. Good for learning how to write your own macros. U/L by Craig
Hulvey.

Brief descriptions and reviews of new files added to the system during

PC-TYPE1.ARC 165888 11-20-86 / PC-Type+ New version of Buttonware
PC-TYPE2.ARC 146432 11-20-86 \ word processor with spelling checker
PC-TYPE3.ARC 193536 11-21-86 / and mail merge capabilities/limited docs
O.K, to admit a prejudice: I'm not at all crazy about Buttonware. Jim
Button's policy of providing expurgated documentation for his programs and
his apparent ambivalence about BBS distribution has never made any of his
programs (PC-File, etc.) particular favorites of mine. This new version of
PC-Type+ falls pretty much in the same category. It is professionally done
and surprisingly powerful, but the absence of documentation unless you
register will make it very hard to see what this program can really do.
You do get on-line help files that are plain ascii and which can be read to
learn how to use the program, but that's a pretty clumsy way to go about
it. There isn't even a statement anywhere in these arcs just summarizing
the program's capabilities -- very strange. Anyway, there is a spell
checker of sorts that doesn't correct mispellings but does find them
(Button calls it a fault checker). The mail merge capabilities look pretty
extensive, and surprise, surprise, it interfaces nicely with PC-File.
Beyond that, it handles larger files than PC-Write and seems to produce
plain ascii output, and all the usual formatting capabilities are here.
The list of printers supported is NOWHERE near as extensive as PC-Write, so
if you don't have one of the most popular ones, you're probably out of
luck.
In short, this isn't going to get me to give up Word Perfect 4.2 by a long
shot. WP 4.2 is about $225 mail order; PC-Type+ is $69.95. If you really
use your computer for word processing, you'll get what you pay for here.
U/L by David Geerinck.
BASWIND2.ARC 29696 11-20-86 Terrific basic windows for QuickBasic 2.0
One of the best of the Basic windowing packages, updated for QB 2.0.

LBLIER16.ARC 36352 11-19-86 Labelier 1.6-Disk Labelling Pgm-Config,clones
This is a disk labelling program tailored to the EPSON (or compatibles such
as the PANASONIC KXP-1091 series) and the IBM-PC and compatibles. It
features:
Labelier works with two of the most common size labels:
1 7/16 x 4 and 15/16 x 3 1/2.
Labelier is configurable on-the-fly for your favorite colors,
Label sizes and default drive.
Labelier now supports other printers. More will be added later.
You may save your configurations back to LABELIER so they are invoked upon
startup (also known as CLONING).
You can label your disks in any disk drive.
Labelier will check to ensure your printer is on (without blowing up).
Labelier will also check for the drive door closed and prompt you to
correct the problems and continue.
v1.6, 11/16/86 with quite a few changes (mostly in the nature of bug fixes)
from version 1.1 that was on this system. A very good disk label program
if the limited printer type support isn't a problem for you (it is for me).
(Note: There was a spurious control-z (end of file) in the doc which would
keep it from being typed properly -- I've corrected that as of 12/04 and
updated the arc). U/L and written by John Dove.
ISE.ARC 49152 11-19-86 Monitor on-line time with Procomm
Untested, as I don't use ProComm, but claims to keep a fairly detailed log
of time spent using ProComm (that is, session logging). U/L by Loren Olson.
QUICK.ARC 4096 11-19-86 Quick-Screen v2.0 9/29/86 speeds up video
Used to speed up the screen access of an IBM PC or compatible:
1. All screen writes are diverted to an internal screen
write routine.
2. The cursor is not positioned until screen activity has
stoped.
3. The console status is only checked once every clock
tick (18.2 times per second).

[11-18-86]
DARC.ARC 10995 11-18-86 Erase constituent files of an ARC but not ARC
Interesting -- looks in a named archive and erases all files in the current
dir that also exist in the archive. I assume it does a name check only,
rather than actually comparing the files and only deleting real dupes.
With that "limitation", the program seems to work as advertised. U/L by
Robert Holmgren.
MGREP.ARC 13696 11-18-86 Text pattern finder; succeeds if [F]GREP fail
Yet another "grep" implementation for DOS to add to your arsenal. No doc
but syntax is given when you type just the name of the program. U/L by
Robert Holmgren.
HSA_TEXT.ARC 30592 11-18-86 High speed screen writing for MS C 3.0/4.0
HSA_TEXT is a library of C functions that provide fast flexible control of
a text screen display. Several memory models are supported and the
libraries seem well documented. Compatible with both MS-C versions 3.0 and
4.0. U/L by Nevin Dubin.
ENVED.ARC 17408 11-18-86 Edit DOS Environment variables like PATH
Useful -- gives you a rudimentary line editor to use to edit environmental
variables. Thus, to change your path, rather than typing the whole path
command in again, you can edit your existing path variable and stuff the
new one back in the environment.
ELEMENTS.ARC 30720 11-18-86 Well done Periodic Table w/data (CGA/Mono)
U/L by Brian Miller.
VTKERMIT.ARC 84992 11-18-86 Best vt100 yet w/xmodem & kermit & scripts
Based on Columbia U's MS-Kermit v2.26 (current version is 2.29), this
version of Kermit adds quite a few features and a measure of
user-friendliness. I find the menu structure a bit awkward, but could
probably use the script capabilities to get around it if I spent enough
time to learn them. Worth a look if you use Kermit and also want VT-100
emulation. U/L by Jay Guitan.

TC700.ARC 147456 11-17-86 Meiners' TurboCalc Spreadsheet v.7.00
U/L by John Stanton. The latest version of Paul Meiners' good spreadsheet
and editor program. Unlike GT Powercomm, this one is not plagued by
constant, minor revisions and I'm happy to have it on the system. Update
notes:
1. New, better high lighting of the row/column labels.
2. Text import.
3. Worksheet merge.
4. Support for 8087 math chip - up to 3 times faster!
5. Color options in the edit module.
6. Save graph to disk file for later editing and/or printing.
Also, this release will auto recalculate after a row/column deletion, if
autocalc is turned on. v7.00 10/13/86.

nonethleless. U/L by Fran Horvath.

PDATE12.ARC 5120 11-16-86 Mes-res/Puts current date in any printed file
U/L by Lee Pollard. Interesting, slightly off-beat program --- a mem-res
util that monitors all output to the printer. If it see ^s or ^l, it put's

ZENO3.ARC 7483 11-16-86 Speed up Screen I/O v3 fixes 40 col mode/ASM
U/L by Bill Gibson. In making some changes to ZENO to so it wouldn't hang

being turned off forever if 40 col mode was invoked, so that has now been
fixed (and for graphics mode as well). [There's a note at the end by the
author of the mods saying he had tried to get on this system to upload the
program as this is where it had originated but kept getting busy signals.

U/L by Steve Sanders. "PC-Draft I is a high resolution pixel oriented

drawing and drafting needs. With PC-Draft I you can produce drawings up to
1280 by 700 dots using IBM's color graphic adaptor high resolution graphics
mode (640 x 200 dots per screen). Such a drawing will fill an 8-1/2 x 11
inch printed output (at 150 dots per inch resolution). Built-in functions
allow you to draw circles, lines, boxes; draw bar, line and pie graphs;
create patterns with which to fill areas; cut and paste objects and save
objects to files for later use. You can record graphic keyboard macros
saved in files for later playback and for animation effects. You can load
and edit fonts. And you can print your drawings on Epson compatible
graphic printers or HP Laserjet+ printers." v2.0, 11/2/86. This is PC-

PAYDAY13.ARC 62450 11-15-86 Menu-driven payroll program/handles tips
U/L by Loren Olson. Hmm.. nearly erased this one. It's somewhat crippled
to encourage registration and also is for the '86 tax year (and this is

KEGELU.ARC 63488 11-15-86 Interesting unix-like utils w/asm source
U/L by Loren Olson. A collection of fairly standard unix-like utils (rm,

this collection (now, maybe someone will make them even better, huh?).
IRMATOOL.ARC 67584 11-15-86 Automate mainframe access w/IRMA PC's. w/ASM
U/L by Jack Kilday. Interesting package which I would happily try if I had
the right hardware in a PC around here or a mainframe that wanted to talk

a timed-even. ASM source for the programs is included.
TRIM.ARC 6144 11-15-86 Unix-like trim a column from a file/w ASM

PCBFIL25.ARC 71296 11-15-86 PCBoard Dir Maint/New Features/PCB 10 & 11.6
U/L and written by John Wulff. Still, THE indispensable PCB utility for
this system. The changes:
November 15, 1986 Version 2.5
1. Expanded error check for a possible prepending or appending
of a "\\" in a file name based on the entries in PCBSETUP.
Now this condition is checked in ALL spots where filename
assignments are made. Deleted some code. Now ONLY PCBOARD
versions 10 and 11.6 are supported. 11.0 through 11.5 support
has been dropped. Also added a new DOS command line switch has
been added, /D. This is used to load a DEF file other than
PCBFILE.DEF for customized listings.
XONE21.ARC 10368 11-15-86 Make ARC from member file(s)v2.1 V.Buerg w/asm
U/L and written by Vern Buerg. Version 2.1 corrects a problem with
extracting larger files. This is a somewhat specialized utility, written
by Vern on request, to create an archive format file from one or more files
within an arc without really extracting and re'arcing them. The particular
application it was written for was a BBS system that wanted to allow
callers to download one file from within an arc without having to take the
whole thing. It works like a charm if you need that capability. ASM
source included (and quite useful in figuring out the mysteries of arc
formats).

QBX202.ARC 49152 11-14-86 Quick Basic cross-ref lister v2.02/V.Buerg
U/L and written by Vern Buerg. Determines cross references to alphanumeric
labels and symbols within a BASIC source program. Latest changes:
2.02, 11/12/86
- Correct problem with $INCLUDE
- Correct error 52 at 3350 if don't want xref output
- expand label tables from 2000 to 2500
- supply documentation
This is an excellent Quick Basic xref utility. Vern is actively soliciting
feedback (code it doesn't handle correctly, other comments, praise????) so,
leave a message -- there's no way one individual can test this kind of
program on every conceivable type of statement allowed by QB.

BOSS1022.ARC 130048 11-14-86 BOSS Windowing Utility, Demo & C Source
U/L by Bill Gibson. To quote the doc:
" The Window BOSS is one of the most powerful and cost-effective products
available to enhance and accelerate the development of system and
applications programs in the "C" language. The BOSS will let you create
programs that have the same look and feel as top sellers like Lotus 1-2-3,
Sidekick, dBASE III, and Framework! Pop-up windows, pull down menus,
status lines, and in context on- line help functions can be easily
implemented. Your applications can drag windows around the screen and
automatically sense the video card installed. All of this without snow,
flicker, or delay!"
Pretty modest, huh? Actually, this is an excellent package, supporting
MS-C, Lattice and CI C86 and probably the best C windowing package on this
system. So, I guess we'll overlook some hyperbole in the doc file.
10/22/86 release, and updates seem to be quite frequent from the looks of
the history file.
PCSHEL35.ARC 43685 11-14-86 K.Williams' DOS shell -- Unix csh-like v3.5
A fairly minor update to Kent Williams' excellent implementation of Unix
'csh' capabilities for MS-DOS.
KILDIR3.ARC 8688 11-14-86 Erase subdir with files/ v3 11/4/86 w/ASM
It works and works well. The program will erase a subdir, including one
that has files in it and even one with another subdir with files in it.
Needless to say (?), this is powerful stuff, but before obliterating a
whole tree the program does stop to ask you to be sure you know what you're
doing. Why doesn't DOS have a command like this? Unix does (rm -r). ASM
source included. v3, but I'm not sure what's changed for this release.

FC200SUP.ARC 96439 11-13-86 Fansi-Console 2.00 Supplemental files/utils
O.K., O.K. Having zinged Mark Hersey lately for the haphazard way in
which 2.00 of Fansi-Console was being released, I really had no choice but
to download the whole thing when he finally posted it on his BBS -- in one,
326K ARC and he only supports 1200 baud. Good grief. Anyway, here it is,
reorganized and crunched with better archive utils. There are 2 major
changes in v2.00 (actually, this is 2.00B, released 11/7/86 and the minor
bug fixes are documented in the history file): (1) The scroll recall
buffer will now automatically be loaded in expanded memory if FCON is
loaded after the LIMs device driver; (2) There is now a /Quick scroll mode
which supposedly produces fast screen updates, even on an IBM CGA, without
producing snow. There are other changes, including the new FANSISET
program to change options via a menu after the program is loaded, but these
are only documented in the full manual you get if you register.
If you only want fast screen updates, I'd suggest trying NANSI22 in
combination with RAW and/or ZENO2 first -- they're a great deal less
complicated and use much less memory. If the scroll recall, enhanced ANSI
capabilities, VT-100 emulation, etc. of FANSI appeal to you, and you have
the memory to spare (especially EMS memory), then give FANSI a try, but
recognize you are going to HAVE to register this package to get all the
benefits. The BBS version of the doc, though painfully long, omits large
sections of the documentation you receive if you register, and you just
won't be able to use some of this program's advanced capabilities without
that documentation.

November, 1986:
BBO321SW.ARC, Brown Bag's "newest" version of what used to be John Friend's
PC-Outline, isn't going to be posted on this system. Here's why:
(1) I spent more time than I can justify trying to find ANY new feature,
bug fix, whatever in BBO 3.21 as compared to PCO 1.08C, John Friend's last
release before he sold PC-Outline to Brown Bag. Nothing! Not a single
change could be found.
(2) What Brown Bag has done is simply changed the name of the program and
half-assedly changed some of the support files. But, it really is an
amateurish job. For example, PCPRINT makes PCODRV.CFG, but the program
looks for BBODRV.CFG. The main file is still called PCO.EXE in the arc,
yet the KEYSET program looks for BBO.EXE.
(3) More importantly, critical features that John Friend used to document
in update notes (see the README.1 file in PCO108C.ARC) are no longer
documented at all in the BBO archive. For example, the uninstall from
memory command (control-backspace 3 times) was in Friend's readme file --
it's nowhere to be found in the BBO archive. BBO provides documentation
from PC-Outline 1.01 or so, from what I could tell. All features added
after that by John Friend and documented in his README files are there but
now undocumented.
In short, you get nothing new. What you get is a hacked copy of PC-Outline
that someone with Norton could have done a better job of patching. It
would be a waste of your time, and the system's time, to download this
file. So, it's not here and PLEASE! don't upload it.

YAMM31.ARC 31731 11-13-86 Yet Another Menu Maker v3.1 11/7/86
The name of this program is candid enough. We're certainly not short of
programs in this category -- menu front-ends for DOS and DOS applications
using batch files off a program that provides the user interface. This one
supports password protection of certain menu options, linking of menus,
logging of activity and:
o Simple cursor bar type interface
o Menu title can be changed
o Foreground,background,blink, and intensity attributes
of any or all entries can be defined.
o Cursor bar foreground/background,etc attributes can
be changed.
o Until the user makes his selection YAMM prints
the current date and time continuously.
o The border type can be changed.
o The menu's background and foreground color, etc can be
changed.
I really can't compare this program to the many others on this system --
I'm just not a user of menu programs. U/L by Loren Olson.

THREAD.ARC 43332 11-13-86 C language help utility/not mem-res v1.01
From Fran's concise abstract of the program:
Thread is a C language help utility. It was written by a member of
the U.S.D.A. Grad School faculty to help students learning the C
language. Thread is a variable record-length database, together
with an index, that enables fast look up and display of C keywords,
standard library functions, and other items.
One of the most unique features of this program leads to its name: When
one topic is linked to another, then the program lets you know of this fact
and easily allows you to "thread" to the next (and the next ...) related
screen. It's very clean and useful. All in all, an excellent package for
beginners in C (and for those who tend often to reach for, but can't find,
a C reference book, even though they're not beginners at all). U/L and

TSS15.ARC 30546 11-13-86 Time Sheet System/dB3+ or Clipper/6/25/86
"The Time Sheet System (TSS) is a program that generates reports from time
sheet data. The time sheet data consists of an employee number,
department, contract charge code, and hours worked.... This program is for
dBase III plus or Clipper Winter '85. A browse function is emulated for
the Clipper application." U/L by Bobby Mangoba.

Sorry - no Herc here to try this one on. U/L by Bill Phillips.
ZOOBAD2.ARC 3072 11-12-86 2nd thoughts on ZOO arc util from Mahoney
Bob Mahoney, Sysop of EXEC-PC BBS in Wisconsin (a commercial BBS and home
of Phil Katz's arc utils), originally circulated a ZOOBAD file condemning
Dhesi's incompatible ZOO archive format. Now, he's decided it's not so bad
after all but pleads for a gradual introduction of it on BBS systems if the
programs proves itself. For my own views, see the review of the ZOO
program itself, below. U/L by David Geerinck.
AOLA104.ARC 64512 11-12-86 ANSI of LA v1.04 graphics editor
A very good graphics editor. This is version 1.04, 10/05/86, and the list
of changes is much too long to summarize in this bulletin. I'll stick with
THEDRAW, thanks, when I use any of these (rarely), but this is also a good
program of this genre. U/L by Dean Wood.
DEV11.ARC 4224 11-12-86 Duncan's device info prgm mod for DOS 3.2/ASM
An update to Ray Duncan's device driver info program to make it work under
DOS 3.2. Changes not by Duncan. Source included.
PDAILY.ARC 11926 11-12-86 Patriquin's daily command scheduler 1.0 10/86
Another good program from Norm Patriquin, this is a batch file tool that
will allow you to schedule one or more tasks to occur only once a day, no
matter how many times the batch file is executed. Probably most useful for
AUTOEXEC.BAT files, but you may well come up with other uses as well.
TELIX111.ARC 76348 11-12-86 Telix 1.11 10/15/86 EXE only/No update notes
I've actually been sitting on this file for well over a week trying to
decide whether to post it. It's authentic -- the author of Telix did issue
1.11 all of 4 days after releasing 1.10, but there are no update notes.
After a week's use, I still haven't found what he changed, and all of the
bugs I noted in my review of 1.10 (albeit quite minor) are still there. Oh
well. This ARC contains only the EXE and OVL file; if you don't have TELIX
1.10, you'll need TELIX110.ARC for the configuration program and
documentation.

THEFAST.ARC 3072 11-12-86 Screen speeder-upper/ZENO-based/no source
Hmm ... The authors of THEDRAW have made a couple of very minor
improvements to ZENO, which was released free and with full ASM source, and
released it as $5 shareware WITHOUT the source. They haven't tried to hide
the origins of this program, but I still think that's a dubious practice at
best.

QDR26.ARC 4988 11-11-86 Buerg's Quick Disk Reformatter v2.6 11/9/86
I assume Vern found something or other he wasn't entirely happy with and
has fixed it, but there are no update notes for this one and nothing
obvious changed. For more info on this excellent program, see the
description of QDR25.ARC below. U/L by John Stanton.
SST-V201.ARC 44032 11-11-86 SST Hard Disk Optimizer v2.01/risky business
SST is a fast disk optimizer but, as the docs point out, you will lose the
entire contents of your hard disk if you have a power failure while the
program is running. Not for me, thanks. v2.01 but no indication as to
what has changed in this version (2.00 was on the system). U/L by John
Stanton.
PRDRDPL3.ARC 38912 11-11-86 ASCII dump (sort) ProComm v2.4x dir, 10/24/86
Program will dump a PROCOMM.DIR file to an ascii file, which you can
then edit with any text editor. At that point, the program will read the
file back in, sort it, and convert it back to a ProComm dialing dir file.
Useful for those of you who use ProComm (ahem). Basic source included,
plus EXE and DOC. U/L by Bob Weinstein.

EMM.ARC 2048 11-10-86 Logically turn expanded memory on/off

KITSMENU.ARC 18560 11-10-86 Miniature menu making system

much better programs of this type on the system, though perhaps this one

straight forward. U/L by Loren Olson.

ZIP88C14.ARC 153783 11-10-86 Latest version of ZIP multi-purp shell/comm
There are just some programs that don't appeal to me and it makes it very
hard for me to be fair to them in this bulletin. ZIP happens to fall in
that category. ZIP is a file manager/sweep util, a desktop program
(notepad, reminder, etc.), a communications program and more. In short, it
does a little bit of everything. I just don't find its command structure
comfortable and prefer other stand-alone programs to perform each of the
capabilities that ZIP integrates. My apologies to the author: ZIP is a
prodigious programming task -- it just ain't my cup of tea. The major
change in this latest version is full archive processing capabilities, both
building and extracting. U/L by Loren Olson.

U/L by Bill Cummings.
BGECHO.ARC 9216 11-10-86 Echos giant-size strings to display
From the authors of the excellent CTRLALT and STACKEY programs, a rather
nifty looking package to dress-up your batch files with BIG ECHO strings
(banner-type displays) that can also include ANSI escape sequences. ASM
source for the programs is provided as well as good, demo batch files.
There's also a GOODDAY program that's a bit of a novelty, but also has
good ASM source. U/L by Art Altenburg.
ADDCOL.ARC 10240 11-10-86 Joins 2 files horizontally into 3rd file
Most useful for joining two files together that contain text in columns.
U/L by Art Altenburg.
COMMENT.ARC 8192 11-10-86 Echo strings to screen from config.sys
Now that's interesting -- in essence, this allows you to add ECHO-type
lines to your CONFIG.SYS file, much like you would in a batch file. I'm
not sure I can think of a time when I'd want to do that, but I'm sure
others will. Includes ASM source. U/L by Art Altenburg.
EASYBASE.ARC 98849 11-10-86 Easy Base list manager 1.0 / not so good
To be honest, I'd erase this, but it's circulating the local boards and
would just be uploaded again. This program just can't hold a candle to the
many other database programs on this system. It also installs a 14K
mem-res I/O manager for itself and that's a programming practice I'm not
fond of at all. In short, not recommended. [This BBS subscribes to the
fairness doctrine --- opposing views welcome.] U/L by Barrie Selack.

"DB3UTIL is a utility program for dBase III programmers especially those
using WordTech's Quicksilver compiler. The program provides four basic
functions:
1. Lists all nonduplicate program, format, procedure, database, index,
memory, and report form files ....
2. Provides a detailed analysis for each program in the system tree (or
one program only) of each program, format, procedure, database, index,

3. Creates a list file for use with the Quicksilver compiler.
4. Allows a global find and replace of strings with or without a query in

PCOPY51.ARC 58240 11-08-86 Patriquin's excellent copy util v5.10
U/L by Loren Olson. The latest version (11/05/86) of Patriquin's very good
copy/move utility that does everything done by DOS 3.2's XCOPY and REPLACE
programs and quite a bit more. Update notes:
-- Added complete capability to rename files using DOS global characters ?
and * in source and target specification
-- Extended ability to copy and create new directories.
-- Problem corrected where ending totals were not updated after last file
copied.
-- When /R (replace) specified, print messages indicating if processed
files are newer, older or duplicates of overlayed files.
===> NOTE: While trying out this program, I was taken aback to get the
message that the /O option (omit files) was crippled and only available to
registered users. There is absolutely nothing in Norm's documentation that
reveals this fact. I don't know what other options have been disabled --
it seems the major functions are intact. I went back to v5.0 and lo and
behold /O was crippled there, too. Patriquin disabled certain features of
his PSEARCH program to encourage registration, but at least he stated that
fact in the documentation. It seems to me it would be preferable (to
choose the mildest word I can think of) to do the same here. Are there
surprises lurking in any of Norm's other programs?
MAKMEM4B.ARC 52992 11-08-86 A.Schulman's make dB3 .MEM file, v 1.04B

which means you should take a look if you work with dB3.

U/L by Craig Hulvey. Allows you to choose easily from among various

re-boot with the new configuration. You could do the same with a good

QFILER23.ARC 88960 11-08-86 File Mngr/DOS Shell w/New FIND & CmndLine Opt
U/L and written by Kenn Flee. The latest version of Kenn Flee's excellent
sweep util/file manager. Update notes:
1. ARCA link now allows a user-defined path for .ARC file.
2. LITLBOOK address book link added to <L>ist submenu. Requires
LITLBOOK 2.1 or greater.
3. QF2.3 adds the ability to FIND files, much like the WHEREIS
program. This is accomplished by linking to the public domain
FINDIT program.
4. The command line [L] (spaceleft) option has been removed, as
well as the Ctrl-L option.
5. Command options for ability to preset directories to be
displayed in left and right windows added, plus a change to
command line switches syntax.
The link to Kenn's LITLBOOK program (which was also in QF22B -- a "beta"
that was on this system) is not one that makes a whole lot of sense to me.
I think LITLBOOK is excellent, but I don't see its relationship to QFILER
other than the fact that they both happen to be by Kenn Flee. Compare that
to the link to FILECAT, Kenn's disk catalog program, which makes perfect
sense to me. Anyway, v2.3 adds a link to the FINDIT program, a good
WHEREIS type program, a copy of which is included in the arc, and that's a
link that is entirely logical and quite useful.
NOTE: I happen to prefer another whereis-type program to FINDIT. A little
judicious patching of QFILER.COM with the binary editor of your choice (I
used DISMOD) will allow you to substitute another file find program so long
as it takes the same command line arguments as FINDIT, and most do. But,
don't blame Kenn if it doesn't work -- and for gosh sakes, patch a copy in
case you do it wrong.
QSORT21.ARC 41984 11-08-86 Ben Baker's QSORT v2.1,fast sort util, 10/86
U/L by Bob Weinstein. This is an excellent and versatile SORT utility with
capabilities I've not seen in other programs. I couldn't begin to describe
all the options of this program in this bulletin -- you'll simply have to
download it and fiddle around for yourself. 99% of the time, I'll still
use Vern Buerg's SORTF program because it is much smaller and faster, but
for somewhat more esoteric tasks, QSORT is a useful program to have around.
RATKEY20.ARC 8192 11-08-86 TSR key redefiner v2.10, 10/23/86, Allen Lin
U/L by Bob Weinstein. A simple, but good, macro-key redefinition type
program, but it swallows 44K+ of memory which seems a bit much for its
limited capabilities. I don't use any of these, but I think I'd see if DKEY
met my needs first as it uses less than 3K of RAM to do pretty much the
same tasks.

DBS-KAT.ARC 256000 11-06-86 DBS-KAT v2.0 (formerly PC-KAT) file cataloger
This is an extraordinarily powerful disk catalog utility. It is also very
complex and HUGE! I suspect very few of you need a program as complicated
as this for your disk cataloging tasks, but if you do, it's here for you.
The program used to be called PC-KAT and version 1.2B was on the system.
In addition to the name change, v2.0, released July '86 (I think), has
improved support for cataloging removeable disk cartridges (a la Bernoulli
Box carts), non-standard disk labels (whatever those are) and some
additional utility programs to manipulate the catalog files. All in all, a
very impressive package but ... overkill? U/L by Dean Wood.

include: Enhanced wildcards ("*" usable anywhere; character ranges); can
catalog entire diskful of archived files in one command; Z format for
convenient reorganization of archives; alphabetization.
Zoodc110.arc: Documentation for Zoo version 1.10. In conjunction with

Zooplan1.arc: Zoo author answers critics and gives a rationale for the Zoo

ZOOBAD.TXT currently being circulated.
I'm prepared to wait and see on this one. The major advantage of ZOO to me
is that Dhesi promises to release source code for the program by the end of
this year that will be portable across operating systems, including to
Unix. There are also features promised that are not yet implemented that
will aid in transferring files between operating systems. In the mean
time, you may find ZOO useful in your own private storage of files, but

ZENO is one of the better BIOS enhancers for speeding up screen writes.

following changes:
Fixes: ZENO would hang the computer if 40-character mode was used. I
modified the program to bypass the speed-up in 40-character mode.
I also modified the program to accept /k or /K on the command line
to kill ZENO.
Also changed message to say 'may cause snow', as the other message
('may cause interference') really worried some users.

that you include in your CONFIG.SYS file. This driver will ask the user on

A disk manager/sweep type utility that actually looks very good.
Unfortunately, it's marred by 2 things: (1) No documentation except a

QDR25.ARC 4864 11-02-86 Buerg's Quick Diskette Reformatter v2.5 11/2
I hope Vern Buerg won't mind this comment. QDR was born because Vern
personally needed a way to do a quick RE-format of a previously used disk.
Since its first release, the program has performed that function like a
charm (in about 3 seconds for a 360K floppy). However, Vern got
interested in the intricacies of formatting in general and, for the fun of
it, also put in the ability to format a new disk (the /F option). In the
first release, bad sector marking was not supported. Subsequent releases
added that capability, but something went amiss: On some machines, the
entire disk would be marked bad. See what you can get yourself into when
you just start poking around for fun, Vern? Anyway, v2.5 fixes the
problem with bad sector marking. On both machines here, the program now
does a full-format perfectly; it was bombing in previous versions on one
of them while working fine on the other.
I still say, and so does Vern, that the primary purpose of this program is
to re-format a previously formatted disk. But, bless it, having put the /F
option in, Vern was going to get it to work! As far as I can tell, it now
does. U/L and written by Vern Buerg.

PIBASYNC.ARC 49280 11-01-86 Async routines extracted from PibTerm v4.0
Contains a set of routines written by Philip Burns, for implementing
fully-buffered asynchronous serial port I/O from Turbo Pascal on the IBM PC
and compatibles. The routines have been extracted from PibTerm v4.0 (not
yet released).
I'm going to quote a portion of the doc which gives the terms of Phil's
license for these routines:
"You may use these routines for any NON-COMMERCIAL purpose whatsoever. If
you change these routines, you MUST make the revised source available.
Many individuals used the code from previous versions of PibTerm and
incorporated interesting changes in the async routines, but did NOT make
the resulting changes available in source form so that all of us could
benefit. I take a dim view of that; I have made this source code
available so that others can learn from what I have done (and correct my
mistakes). I expect you to provide the same courtesy in return."
All I can say is, amen. It's about time some of you who have used Phil's
(and other's) code started contributing something back to the library of
source code that is circulated on bulletin boards. Otherwise, people like
Phil are going to give up in disgust, and then we all lose.
U/L and written by Philip Burns.
BBL.ARC 74752 11-01-86 BBL Forth (limited PD - no military use)
BBLDOC.ARC 111616 11-01-86 BBL Forth documentation
"BBL (Big Business Language or Big Black Lady) is a public domain 32- bit
Forth Compiler for MS-DOS machines. You are free to use, sell, modify or
cannibalize any parts of BBL without credit. All source, object code and
documentation can be used for any purpose, EXCEPT MILITARY." [emphasis
added]
And, I thought I'd seen everything! This file won't stay on the system long
as we have in this town an excellent public board (Jerry Shifrin's East
Coast Forth Board) that specializes in Forth. U/L by Winston Llamas.
QWIK11.ARC 15360 11-01-86 Fast screen writes for Turbo Pascal
An update to some fast screen write routines in inline for Turbo, with demo
programs, etc. U/L by Craig Hulvey.

PKX33A12.COM 53248 11-01-86 Katz's ARChive utils: PKXARC 3.3 & PKARC 1.2
11-01-86 COM file will self-extract and create new
11-01-86 programs and documentation -- v. fast programs
These are excellent, fast archive utilities. When run, this COM file will
self-extract and give you PKXARC (an extraction util) and PKARC (an arc
builder), plus documentation. Most importantly, PKARC 1.2 fixes a bug
that showed up in version 1.1 which would lead to an invalid arc when
squeezing some files (rare, but unnerving). The author also claims it is
"up to" 20% faster than v1.1. Well, "up to" includes 0 - 20; my own
not-THAT-extensive testing would put it in the lower part of the range.
PKARC will also tend to produce just slightly smaller arcs than the
previous version, due to some fine tuning of the crunch algorithm for
binary files. PKXARC also claims to be faster, by 5% says the author, and
that's just too small a change for me to verify. Both programs now
support insertion of a comment describing the arc itself, in addition to
describing individual files, without losing compatibility with other 5.1
format ARC programs. U/L by James Bach.
Undocumented feature? PKARC 1.2 is giving the arcs it creates the current
date, rather than the date of the most recent file inside. That's the way
ARCA does it, but not the way PKARC 1.1 or SEA's ARC programs work.
There's no mention of this change in the docs.
CHET.ARC 30720 11-01-86 Character Font Editor for EGA/.ASM/.C pgms

RLINKDOC.ARC 3072 11-01-86 RLINK protocol description
Another protocol being proposed to handle modems, especially 9600 bps
models, that have error-correction as part of their firmware. This archive
contains the July '85 protocol doc, written by Donovon Kuhn of US Robotics.
Philip Burns has written a stand-alone RLINK module which has been
submitted to USR to ensure compatibility with the standard. Once that is
obtained, Phil indicates that both the executable and the Turbo Pascal
source will be made available. Note, that means RLINK will be a true,
public domain protocol, like Forsberg's Ymodem-G, but unlike Friel's
Imodem for which the specs have not been released. That's a situation I
hope John Friel will correct as soon as Imodem stabilizes. U/L by Philip
Burns.
